Sometimes a product becomes so popular with consumers that the brand
name permeates the national (or even international) lexicon, and people use it to describe any number of similar products, regardless of the actual brand. Think
Xerox® for a photocopier or Kleenex® for facial tissue or Band-Aid® for plastic adhesive bandages. We use these terms to describe any number
of products, ignoring their true brand names, in favor of the most popular term.
Velcro® has had the same effect on the market. Generically known as
"hook-and-loop tape," most people go to the store in search of Velcro, even if the store doesn't carry that brand. This time we are going to look at the
many uses of the handy notion that has been fastening and unfastening with the familiar "rrriiippp" sound for years. |
