Finished Size

5 1/2 inches x 5 1/2 inches

Materials

Tools

  • Rotary cutter and cutting mat
  • Grid ruler
  • Pins
  • Iron and ironing board
  • Scissors
  • Hand-sewing needle
  • Sewing machine
  • Point turner

Instructions

  1. Trace the heart template onto iron-on stabilizer and cut out the heart.
  2. Cut one 7-inch square from each of the cotton print fabrics and two 7-inch squares from the flannel. Layer each of the print squares, right side up, over a flannel square. Flip one set of squares, right side down, over the remaining set of squares, aligning the edges, so the right sides of the print fabrics are facing each other and are sandwiched between the flannel squares.
  3. Position the heart template, cut from stabilizer, adhesive side down on the top of the layered squares and fuse in place. Pin the fabrics together outside the template. Stitch around the edge of the heart template, leaving a 2 1/2-inch opening along the straightest edge for turning. Along the opening, hand-baste the heart front and back fabrics to their corresponding flannel backings, just outside the heart outline. Remove the heart template.
  4. At the opening, fold the top two fabrics over along the stitching line and press. Repeat on the other side to make crease marks along the seam line.
  5. Trim the fabrics 1/8 inch from the stitching, clipping across the lower point of the heart and clipping to the stitching at the center top of the heart.
  6. Turn the heart right side out. Run a point turner around the inner curves and lower point of the heart interior to define the heart shape. Stuff the heart with a combination of dried flower petals and polyester fiberfill.
  7. Turn the raw edges in along the opening, matching up the crease lines. Hand-stitch the opening closed.
  8. Glue the trim around the seam line, starting at the center top.
  9. Cut a 9-inch length of ribbon and fold in half. Align the ends and turn under 3/8 inch. To make the hanger, stitch the ends to the center top of the heart, concealing the raw edges.
